About the Pastor
Having earned two baccalaureate degrees, including a Bachelor of Science in Education and a Bachelor of Arts in Theology, Pastor Caldwell formally ordained as deacon in the African Methodist Episcopal Zion Church in 2000 and ordained elder in 2004, was appointed by Bishop Warren Matthew Brown as Pastor of St. John African Methodist Episcopal Zion Church in Laurel, Delaware in May 2007. She has served this role faithfully. In addition, she has 32 years of experience working previously as a mentor, faith counselor, community organizer, fund raiser, church pianist, worship leader and editor-in-chief of the church newsletter.

In July 2009, Pastor Shirley M. Caldwell decided to continue her ministry as Senior Pastor outside of the confines of the African Methodist Episcopal Zion Church in Laurel, Delaware. Finding the support of many in this endeavor, Pastor Caldwell founded the newly organized Ross Point Freedom Church in August 2009. Although services are temporarily being held at Church of God Saints of Christ in Seaford, Delaware, the church has already completed several fundraisers in an effort to generate funds for a new building to call home. Pastor Shirley M. Caldwell and members of Ross Point Freedom Church believe faithfully that God will abundantly provide this and all other needs of the church in fulfilling its mission to meet the community’s physical and spiritual needs through the love of Jesus Christ.

Pastor Caldwell’s short-term and long-term objectives involve establishing a venue that will support the church’s diverse congregation and expanding ministries. Currently, there is a thriving youth group for local young people, an active senior group, and an outreach group that reaches out to the homeless and incarcerated. Utilizing her 31 years of active service experience in prison ministry and 20 years of housing management with the federal Housing Urban Development (HUD) program, Rural Development (RD) program and Federal Tax Credit program, Pastor Caldwell intends to establish transitional housing projects for individuals recently released from correctional institutions. She hopes to see these projects provide essential life skills training for these individuals to be able to reestablish themselves in civil society.

Pastor Caldwell’s passion and vision for Ross Point Freedom Church is that the church will be a church with the vision of God, searching for the lost, sharing the love of Jesus Christ, and winning victory to the Kingdom of God through the works of the Holy Spirit.

Pastor Shirley M. Caldwell resides in Laurel, Delaware and has been married to Reverend Paul Caldwell, Sr. for 31 years. She is a mother of five children, grandmother of 15 and great-grandmother of 3.
